Wednesday, August 4, 1999 — North Shore News — 13 Happy birthday, St. John’s Katharine Hamer Contributing Writer ST. John’s Anglican Church, one of the oldest on the North Shore, is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. The only church older than St. John’s is St. Paul’s Catholic Church on the Squamish band reserve, “but they’re a mission church,” says St. John’s parish secre- tary Beth Lawrence, “we were the first parish church.” According to parish priest June Massin, parishioners come from as far away as Langley to attend services at St. John’s. Massin says it’s “wonderful to be parish priest of 2 church at the end of a century and to take it into the new century...it’s quite humbling.” At the turn of the century, only a handful of families lived in the central Lonsdale neighbourhood —— but they’ were all part of the Church of England flock. There were, at the time, few roads in the area, and ferry services from Vancouver did not run on Sundays. From 1899-1900, therefore, dedicated ministers from St. Paul’s Church came across by rowboat to conduct services.
