With the last treat you were to call your dog’s name, then without moving, reward your dog for sitting in front again. Part two: The founda- tion for this command has been built with positive reinforcement. Your dog has created a mental image in its mind — when it hears the name you have chosen, a flash card goes up in its head picturing him sitting in front of you. Your dog now knows the correct thing to do so we can start co stretch and shape its behaviour. For the next two weeks: Step t: Hold five treats behind your back, and one more in your other hand at vour belly-button. Have a heiper hold your dog gently (notin a sit/dow nor stay) ac a distance of about twenty feet from vou. Step 2: When your Jog has stopped fussing, say vour recall. The dog should [cave your helper and sit in front of you. (If it does nor, creuch down and hold the treat out to lure it in.) Step 3: Immediately reward your dog with one treat. Step 4: With your dog still sitting in front of you, say its recall and give a treat from behind your back. Use up the remaining treats one ata time with the dog sitting in front as vou did in the initial training stage. Step 5: End with release command. Train in this exact fash- ion twice a day for the next two weeks. For fun, try it out in the house when the dog is in a different room or in your backyard if distractions are minimal.
