CURTAIN CALL Horse shows in Europe in the mid-nineteenth century evolved into larger animal acts with the human pooper- scoopers becoming the clowns of the ring. Sideshows and midways featuring “raree shows” like the Bearded Lady and Merwoman became popular in the U.S. at the turn of the century. The PNE provides its own carnival and midway as a backdrop to this year’s headline event — Cirque Parasol. The show starts slowly, but spot on time, with a very good bicycle act (Norman Beaurnont manages to balance a bike on Pretty much every part of his body!) and an ordinary, in coraparison, juggler. Svetlana Gololobi-va feats of balance and strength impressed ‘the crowd, Blasso’s (Blass Villalpando) expressive mime enhanced his “bad” magic routine and had us laughing ou: loud, but it was. Ruby Rowat who had us on the edge of our seats with her - solo trapeze act. Rowat started her circus career in the _ Vancouver-based Cirkids, a children’s circus. It’s the second act thar underlines Cirque Parasol’s commit- _Ment to entertainment of the senses. “<1, Every act, other than Chocolate’s (Paul Vachon) clowning, is ‘choreographed to emphasize the beauty of the human form, - whether in flight on the straps (think bung-es) or ‘hanging in a aerial web of fabric. .:, The music, whether chosen or live, and the lighting are rically fabulous and even the ring changes are all part of precise presentation. nfortunately, the beauty conjured passed straight over the ds of many tired and footsure PNE-goers looking for a quick thril UPTO = oy 60%: an ‘LAST FALL STOCK Bi " .
