4- Sunday, February 16, 1997 — North Shore News NV Catholic school meeting set By lan Noble News Reporter A school proposed for a Catholic Church in the Seymour area goes to a public hearing Tuesday night. The 7 p.m. meeting in North Vancouver District council chambers may go ahead without an important piece of paper from the provincial government. The district is waiting for a reply from Victoria on whether the province will swap its patch of land on the cast side of Mount Seymour Road above the Mount Seymour Parkway for district land. For many neighbors of the St. Pius X Parish at the corner of the two roads, the lack of ‘an entrance and sxit from Mount Seymour Road to the proposed 200-student school is the only beef they have with the proposal. Mayor Don Bell sent the a ere request to Environment, Lands, and Parks Minister Cathy McGregor fast month. He had hoped to get a reply back by Jan. 27. Acting Mayor Pat Munroe said the district is still waiting for the province's official posi- tion. “There was a verbal indica- tion of interest from the province for a land swap, but there’s been nothing formal,” he said Friday. Although Munroe said the trattic issue is important, the public hearing will go ahead. Munroe said the options are well-known so people can make their views heard - Tuesday. He said the district may still get a conclusive reply from Clark and Co. before the public hearing. . Munroe. said the district councillors would likely wait for the reply before making a decision on the _ bylaw. However, he said council would not wait forever for.the province. He believes it will be a matter of weeks before a decision is made. The church’s desire to have a new school building by September brings urgency to the decision. Church neighbors say they don’t object to the 260-stu- dent school going in, but some do have problems with the intended access to the school. Current plans call for the access to be off Brockton Crescent, one block east of Mount Seymour Road and just off Mount Seymour Parkway. Neighbors want the school’s exit 10 go through 3 greenbelt to Mount Seymour Road. North Vancouver District says Brocktan is a collector road that can handle 10,000 vehicles a day. It currently car- ties 3,200. Neighbors say thar the 196 extra vehicles expected on Brockton Crescent when the school reaches capacity in approximately five years wili iNerth, Shore News,; founded in: 1969 as an independent suburban newspaper and qualified under Schedule 111, Paragraph 11! of the Excise Tax Act, is published cach Wednesday, Friday and Sunday by -North Shore Free Press Ltd. and distributed to every door on the North Shore.
