—— Outlining the Changes

Beginning July 1, 1996, the Employment Insurance system replaces the present. __
UI system. It provides Canadians with basic income protection, plus a range of new
Re-employment Benefits to help unemployed workers get jobs.

Here are answers to some of the questions you may herve about the new Employment
Insurance system. Some changes will take effect on July 1, 1996 while others will come

into force in January 1997.

FOR CLAIMS STARTING wuLY 1, 1996 OR AFTER:

. You will still require setter 12 to 20 weeks of

work in the last year, depending on the rate of
unemployment in your region. The higher the rate .
of unemployment, the fewer number of weeks of
work are required. (The hours system will not come
into effect until JSenuary: 1, 1997.)

HOWEVER, you yequire a minimum of 26 insured

7 weeks of work if
‘@ you are entering the workforce for the first time;

® you are re-entering the workforce after an
- absence of two years or more;
a-you have less thom:14 weeks of employment in
_ your first year entering or re-entering the
workforce:
