ike trek for | 10th-annual fundraiser set for September ELEVEN NORTH Shore resi- dents are preparing to pedal for Jung health in the British Columbia Lung Association's 10th-annual Bicycle Trek for Life and Breath, Sept. 10-11. The group will be among 250 cyclists on a fun weekend of cycle touring. Traveling at their own pace. they will ride a two-day route through 200 kni (124 mi.) of beauti- ful scenery in the Fraser Valley and northwestern Washington State. Trek °94 is nearly sold out. Cyclists are encouraged to register early so they can spend the summer training for the ride and collecting donations. Each participant must raise at least $350 before the Trek, which has an overall goal of $215,000 tor medical research, health education and other programs in B.C. Fundraising alone or in teams, trekkers earn incentive awards for collecting donations, including bikes and cycling equipment, com- pact disc players and entries in drawings for resort packuges and international travel donated by Air Canada. Giving blood in a new way WHEN THE Red Cross Blood - Donor Clinics come to Lynn - Valley Centre. on Friday, July 15, North Shore residents will have a chance to experience a new and improved system of giving blood. The changes have been made in response to blood donor coacerns surrounding the time it takes for people to give their gift of life. “We are very excited about the- changes we are making to serve our blood donors more efficiently,” said Dr. David Pi, acting medical director for the Red Cross Vancouver Blood Centre. ‘The bottom Jine is that the donors are our customers and we must put them first. They provide the biood which is broken down into compo- nents and used by patients in 93 hospitals ii British Columbia and the Yukon. Our donors want to he!p people in need and we must make it as convenient as possible for them to do so.” Blood donor clinic changes include additional nursing staff working at the clinics and the intro- duction of combined bleed/rest beds which allow donors to give their blood and rest on the same bed instead of ihe usual two beds. “At this time, we would person- ally like to thank our donors for being supportive and patient with us,” said Dr. Pi.
