Retired columnist incensed Linen change + J ‘done deal Kevin Gillies News Reporter CONCERNS expressed during an impromptu sit-in Thursday by Lions Gate Hospital staff are being discussed by hospital management and union representatives. Workers had walked off the job because of a hospital decision to contract out the preparation of operating room linen bundles instead of having them prepared in-house. The change will result in the loss of five positions — one currently vacant — but replacement work in the hos- pital is being sought for four staff affected by the decision. “We sort of agreed that we would have ongoing discus- sions addressing their concerns,” said Lions Gate spokesman Clay Adams, But he stated that there was no turning back on the decision which was a “done deal.” He said the decision to contrace out the work to Kimberly-Clark — known for its disposable paper and per- sonal hygiene products — would save the hospital around $200,000 annually and thar Lions Gate was one of the last hospitals to make the change. The five positions paid approximately $30,000 a year plus benefits. Adams also said that without the change, Lions Gate would have a new annual cost of $200,000. “That is what would be the cost of upgrading to nicer the infection control standards,” he said. It is also the amount the hospital will save with the change.
