AN ESTIMATED 6,000
Capilano College students
turned out for the first day
of college classes Sept, 3.

The figure is down from 1990-
91 enrolment of 9,653.

Among the new facilities to
greet the students was the $3.4-
million sportsplex, which will be
officially opened Friday, Sept. 20
starting at 7 p.m.

Work on the the sportsplex,
which has seating for approxi-
mately 1,900 students, began in
May 1990. The facility includes a
14,500 square-foot, $225,000 gym
floor and a second, 2,000 square-
foot multi-purpose gym.

The sportsplex will be used by

college students aod thie North
Vancouver Reereation Commis-
sion.

“We are one of the last colleges
not ta have a sports facility. |
think it is important ¢o note that
the students were the first ones to
put the money in the pot,"’ said
college president Dr. Douglas
Jardine.

Project funding came from:
*the provincial government ($1.2
million, including $400,000 from
lottery grants);
ethe three North Shore
municipalities ($660,000);
ethe Capilano College Student
Society ($700,000);
¢ the college’s board of governors
($14,000);
ethe college’s employees
($60,000);
