> OUCH Dear Editor: Your editorial of June 22, on North Vancouver District Coun- cil’s June 13 decision to reject the multi-family redevelopment pro- posal for the Matsumoto Shipyard site, and instead initiate expansion of Cates Park, is obviously based solely on media coverage of the issues —- coverage which has fail- ed compleiely to portray the real issues involved or the significance of council’s policy decision. While it would be naive to sug- gest that a 900-name petition did not play a major role in resolving the controversy, nevertheless the six aldermen who favored the deci- sion and over-rode the district planning department’s recommen- dations expressed concern and support which have yet to be reflected by media coverage. Had counci! gone the pro- development course, it would ‘not have been simply moving toward nan, a all ce. ud BHECHGAES Ff bestowing 129 suites on Seymour: rather it would have been initiating the conversion of land on both sides of the Dollarton Highway be- tween ‘the Indian Reserve and Cates Park for the accommodation of about 500 units in a number of projects over a period of time, ac- cording to the prognosis of the district planning department. In this section, Dollarton Highway is narrow and a real roller coaster built across severely sloping land, which means widening the road bed and finding safe locations for major driveway entrances is vir- tually ruled-out. This is only one of the several Negative impacts which would result from the total conversion, but one which has been simply glossed over by district staff since it embraced the developer's con- cept for the Matsumoto site some six months ago. Taken together, these considerations led to the MAILBOX conclusion that this just isn’t the place to locate 500 apartment units — Ramrod's 129-unit project be- ing just the start. When council took its pro-park approach, a ‘Big Park’ concept grew out of the Save-Our-Shores resistance group's initial proposal. This strategy would sec —- over a period of time, as the seven owners involved choose to sell — the ex- pansion to the west of Cates Park's present 50 acres by some 11 acres and 1800 feet of waterfront, and its linkage north across Dollarton Highway to some 160 acres of district-owned land, most of which is now designated for parks and conservation. The total expanded park would have the area and accessibility to become by far the most important waterfront park in the whole of Burrard Inlet east of Stanley Park. At the elbow of this exciting potential major park arm is the snaw Cable treats its subscribers like ‘cattle’ Dear Editor: This is my first letter to the North Shore News. Normally [ am a very easy going sort of guy, but I find it necessary to write this letter if only to vent my sheer rage hav- ing just read the fatest proposed increase of $1.09 to my Shaw Cable subscription. While a dollar nine is not much these days, and certainly a sum I can afford, what really burns me is the matter in which this imposition was carried out. I don’t know how my other fellow Shaw Cable subscribers on the North Shore first learned about this implementation, but I for one was not made aware of Shaw's in- tentions. I strongly object to this. The approach of ‘‘Here are three new channels, oh! by the way, that will be extra on your bill, like it or lump it’? is very sad in- deed, almost Draconian. J need a 24-hour weather’.channel like 1 need a hole in the head, not to mention another bible-thumping channel -—— something I can get for free from any radio. Having gone through the mo- tions with Shaw Cable and ques- tioning them on their methods, | am told the company appreciates customer input and it is always teady to listen and act ‘*democrat- ically” — but you haven’t, have you Shaw Cable? When asked why don’t you scrap some of those American Neanderthal channels and save some money? the answer, predictably was ‘‘we cannot do that — we are bound by our com- mitments.*’ ‘ I] will not be renewing my subscription from Sept. I, 1988. Are there any mare fellow North Shore subscribers ready to go T.V. “cold turkey’’? 1 wonder, Shaw Cable, I really wonder. Now you not only control what people see in your program content (ref. The Great North Shore Im- migration Debate), but now you are telling us if you want cable you will watch this and you will pay that!
