Water tunnel studied

FUNDS have been approved by
the Greater Vancouver Regional
District for investigations into the
reliability of the large First Nar-
rows water tunnel where two ma-
jor breaks have occurred in the last
four years, the most recent Dec.
Vt

The investigations, costing an
estimated $120,000, will include

the design of any remedial works.

The studies will take about six
months to complete. They will
focus on the north shaft of the
system, where both breaks occur-

red, but will also include the south
shaft (located in Stanley Park) and
the tunnel itself.

Work on the project is underway.

The 714-foot diameter pressure
tunnel under the First Narrows has
been in operation since 1933. |

It carries water from the
Capilano system to Vancouver and
several other municipalities.

The break in the north shaft in
1982 put the tunnel out of opera-
tion for about seven weeks while
the break fast December shut it
down for about five weeks.
