The Okangan Summer School of the Arts has several progams for children 6-13 years of age which might appeal to them. Susan Gibbs of Sum- merland is teaching a class in Art for Children. “The Circus” is the theme through which the students will learn print making, picture making with yarn and fabrics, as well as three dimensional construction. The 6-9 year olds will get, good basic introducion to each area while the 9-12 age group will be able to develop their skills more thoroughly. This course may be taken by the week or for three weeks, July 5-23. Creative Writing for Children 9-13 years of age will help them write for fun and enjoyment. They will get a chance to try both prose and poetry and will be encouraged to use _ their imaginations, from July 12- 16. Carollyne Lansel, the instructor for this class, is a Penticton teacher for this class, who enjoys. the freshness of the ideas which spring from this age group. All children like dressing- up and = make-believe. “Children’s Theatre — Theatre of the Imagination” will enable them to do this, from July 6-9. 7 Bill Bennett, Director of the Traveller's Theatre in Kelowna, will direct them in theatre games and other theatrical activities. There are two age group in this course: 6-8 years and 9-11 years. “Mime and Clowning” has Home baked goodies It will not be a day for dicters on Saturday at Neighbourhood House. Comedy timing and slapstick along with other skills of the art will be taught by Gordon White of Axis Mime Theatre in Vancouver. He stresses the importance of mind and body coordination as part of the course. Youngsters who like to tumble about will be able to do it with grace and proper timing. Kitemaking is a one morning adventure taught by Jack Ramsay of Vancouver. Each studeat will make a kite which is guaranteed to fly. The morning will be used for making kites and the afternoons will be used for flying them. Jack Ramsay is an Editor of the Vancouver Sun and has been enjoying the making of kites for ten years. This course is from July 14-16. Suzuki Violin students will receive instruction from Willem Bertsch. The Suzuki Violin’ Workshop = and every Tuesday .. authorized Institute will take place July 11-17, in Pen- ticton. During this special week, students, parents and teachers will concentrate on key points of the Suzuki approach to string playing. There will be private and group sessions as well as recitals, concerts, demonstrations and video tapes and parent sessions. There will also be con- sultations with the Director. Willem Bertsch is the Director of this Institute. He is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and founding conductor of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. At present, Mr. Bertsch is conducting the Symphony Orchestra in Melbourne, Plorida, and has organized a Suzuki program in_ the schools there.
