navigational expert with the
International Civil Aviation
Organization, which
monitored the final lurching
throes of Skylab, “believes
similar alerts for falling
space debris are likely in the
future.

ICAO ended a 24-hour
worldwide alert among its six
regional headquartrs at 3
p-m. EDT Wednesday after
final confirmation from U.S.
space officials of Skylab’s
disintegration in the area of
western Australia.

“Since there are still about
1,500 pieces of space junk
up there, it’s pretty likely
we'll be going through this
again sometime,” Duane
Freer, director of ICAO’s
Air Navigation Bureau, said
