While it is a fact that the Caps will probably never have as many ‘scoring op- portunities again this season, it is equally factual that it is unlikely they will run into a team with such enthusiasm, dedication and hard work as _ the Hurricane. _+ Perhaps the spirit of this young (no player is over 28) “team can be shown by their reaction following the game. When coach _Timo Liekoski entered the tiny dungeon, occassionally known as the visitor’s dressing room, he said “Well guys, you did it.” They cheered then, like a bunch of high school kids. It says a lot for their spirit. Playing without their scoring leader, Kai Haaskivi, the Hurricane used five Americans during the course of the-game including a pair of centre backs marking Kevin Hector and Trevor Whymark. The score of the match indicates their ef- fectiveness. os In spite of the all out effort by the Caps in the second half the young Hurricane team refused to wilt under the pressure. Keeper Paul Hammond managed to stop everything that came his way and ‘never once lost his composure while facing the barrage aimed at him. Neither did his teammates. And it is a strange team on paper. A total of 11 nations Is sports your business? lf it Is, you can use this space to reach every sports- minded person on the North Shore. In spite of the language barrier, this is a team that enjoys playing together. And sporting a record of 9-2, it is not too difficult to enjoy the game. Whitecaps, for their part, now hit the road for three straight games before returning to Empire Stadium and the Cosmos on June 16. Tonight they are up against Alan Hinton’s Tulsa Roughnecks and on Saturday they play an af- ternoon encounter with the powerful Minnesota Kicks. The following Wednesday they are in California. word of. ‘The ability to control the ball yet the inability to score goals was apparent to the more than 26,000 fans Saturday night. Time after time the Caps prepared for their attack with slow, deliberate buildups. only to have their _ shots go wide or break down at the back line. Willie Johnston showed his skill to full advantage with many a penetrating move down the wing. However, too often he was on his own with no support down the middle. Johnston’s over exuberance caught the eye of referee Robert Morgan and the Scot was issued his fifth yellow card of the season which will cause a one game suspension. WEST VANCOUVER ‘ editor: Andy Fraser ‘Roger Kenyon, chosen as: player of the game, was seemingly able to lead with his ‘elbows most of the evening without drawing the foul calls, however, he too had an altercation late in the game and received a yellow card. The well played game came close to being ruined by inconsistent officiating, an apparent fact of life in the NASL this season. Phil Parkes had a fairly easy night of it. The rangy goal keeper was only called upon to make two saves, and it was on the rebound of one of the sHots that Eduardo Marasco put in the game winning ball.
