By Surj Rattan News Reporter North Vancouver's Coast Mountain Rescue team beat out eight other teams from around the province and will now compete at the international level in England this summer. This is the first time ever that a North Shore team has placed first in the annual first aid competi- tion. “We uscd zood sclid first aid. We may not be fast but we're good,’ said team member and first aid coordinator Bridget Milsom in describing the team’s winning performance. The North Vancouver team, which Milsom formed four years ago, is made up of first aid ski patrol volunteers. The skiers patrol Cypress, Hollyburn Ridge, Grouse and Seymour mountains. Other winning team members include coach Brian Bolam, Stan Sovdat and Michael Bolam. Milsom said the team will now try to raise funds to finance their trip to the international competi- tion this summer by holding car washes and soliciting funds from the local ski industry and cor- porate businesses. All four team members, who teach first aid programs through St. John Ambulance, have also taken a new WCB first aid indus- trial course. Two of the team members took the course through the North Vancouver City Fire Department. The award for first place diagnostics went to the Riverside Safety team from Lum- by. The competition included a firs: aid treatment problem, a diagnostic assessment skill testing problem and a stretcher-carrying event. Teams and team members were judged on their overall and individual abilities to respond quickly and with appropriate treatments.
