By STEPHEN BARRINGTON Contributing Writer Two cars in the SkyTrain fleet have been christened Spirit of North Vancouver and Spirit of West Vancouver, Grace McCarthy, minister responsible for transit, announced Thursday at two cere- monies on the North Shore. “1 know this will be beneficial to the city and the district,’"’ McCar- thy said, in naming one of the coaches Spirit of North Van- couver, . The North Vancouver car, which is now in operation with its new name, will have two interior display cards with maps and in- formation telling riders about events in the North Vancouver area, “It gives an opportunity for areas to tell what is going on in the community,’’ McCarthy explained. North Vancouver District Mayor Marilyn Baker said she was pleased with the naming, and added that she and North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks had been working together for three months on the idea. “We thought we would like to take the spirit of North Vancouver all the way to New Westminster,’ Baker said. “T think it will be a matter of pride for the residents of the jLawyers aid| low-income residents LAWYERS from) throughout British Columbia are responding to the Canadian Bar Association’s request to provide legal assistance to low-income residents in the areas of civil and administrative law. Vancouver lawyer Georges Goyer, speaking to a recent meeting of the branch’s provincial council, said about 20 per cent of the eligible practising lawyers in the province have agreed to accept at least one case referral per year ona reduced or no-fee basis since the program was announced ‘\-o months ago. “The response io this voluntary program to date has been ex- cellent,”’ said Gover, chairman of a wuiiiliive MoiiiUTIg Hie special legal assistance scheme. “We have had positive returns from approximately 900 practising lawyers, including four large law firms that have agreed to accept one legal assistance referral per year for every lawyer in the firm."’ The Legal Services Society has begun making cuse referrals under the program, introduced as a short-term emergency measure to provide legal assistance to low- income British Columbians in civil and administrative law. {t supplements similar activities being provided on a reduced or no-fee basis in criminal and family law cases. Lawyers were asked to accept a minimum of one ‘‘pro-bono’’ referral per year in cases where it appears that the person's liberty, livelihood, health, safety, sustenance or shelter is threatened. The program is an interim measure introduced as a result of the effect of the provincial gov- ernment’s fiscal restraint policies on the funding of essential legal services to the needy in B.C. district and the city to have this named after the area,’’ Loucks said. “Our turn has come,’’ he said, in reference to the naming of cars after various other municipalities.
