What joy! Thanks to district council's appreval of Canadian Tire’s big box develop- ment, Main Street is slated to become the fast food capital of North Vancouver. To maximize development (and profits) on the old Venice Bakery site, four fast food restaurants are being squeezed onto the site including wo drive- throughs. *: The overcrowded site means Canadian ‘Tire " teactor-trailers will not have sufficient room to manoeuvre and instead will use public streets to back into their loading dock. Even though the regional super store will attract customers with- in a wide radius, the parking requirement was reduced by 126 stalls. In addition, 30 current on-street parking spots will be lost. Pretty dumb considering sucrounding businesses already complain of a parking deficiency in the area. Prophesizing a traffic. nightmare, over 100 surrounding, businesses presented district coun- cil with a petition opposing the development. ers were reassured by Coun. Dunsford who diligently reported that she had driven through the area on Sunday MAIL Bo lows traf afternoon at 3 pam. and that there was very fit- ue trattic and she didn’t see a problem! Opposition also came from the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and the dis- uict’s design panel. As well, the project is con- trary to Lynn Valley’s OCP which stipulates industry rather than retail for most of the site. However, Canadian Tire employees did speak in favour of the development. Within a one kilometre radius there’s already A&W, Wendy's, Subway, White Spot and Bread Garden. How many more do we need? 1 can think of no business that generates a higher hourly volume of traffic than fast food chains, Considering the growing congestion around Second Narrows, routine line-ups on Mountain Highway and Main Street and no fix in sight, these are the wrong kind of businesses for the area. I believe this was another bonehead decision from Don Bell and- his community wrecking: érew of Denault, Dunsford and MacKay-Dunn with Harris absent. Only Crist and Muri spoke with a vision. Nurturing organized crime Dear Editor: : Re: Messenger shor, Sept. 22. What a silly editorial. What exactly do you want the federal government to do about organized crime, turn Canada into a policy state? People die every day and you get your knickers in a knot because a journalist is shot? : In any event, organized crime is the child of government. Only government can nurture organized crime by banning. popular goods and services such as prostitution and drugs, actions that run directly contrary to our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. * Just as the canary in the mine warned of dangerous fumes, it is the presence of organized crime that warns us that freedom is on the wane Alan Randell, arandell@islandnet.com ICRC HAS A TEAM OF LAWYERS, ~~ SHOULDN'T YOU? * All claims have time limits ¢ Documents you sign can.
