10 - North Shore News — Sunday, November 21, 1999 ——_-—_ MAIL Box: Wins and iasses in the ‘Boar’ War Dear Editor: Spelling need not be a bore! Recently { went in the West Vancouver Memorial Library and asked the duty librarian for advice on finding books abour the Boer War. October 1999 is the H¢Oth anniversary of the outbreak of this conflict and I have a special interest in it since my grandfa- ther saw service in South Africa. Our friendly local librarian dutitully tapped away at the keys on her computer and finally announced in a trastrated voice that the library had nothing on this war. I was giite surprised but on sec- ond thoughts checked her spelling: she had been looking for books on the Boar War! We subsequently teund plenty of materi- al on the Boer War. Imagine my surprise on reading the Oct. 26 edition of the North Shore News. Our local French restaurant, Chez Michel, obviously trying to widen its menu, bad placed an advertisement offering customers Wild Boer. The timing of this ad seemed more then a coincidence but I coukin’t help wondering about their source of meat! ' Vm net going w Chez Michel to dine on wild bacr but I mi t suggest that they got together with West Vancouver library sort our their spellings — they might not be boors after all! Ted Fed Langley glish Instructor West Vancouver Dear Editor: !owas heartened to hear that this Remembrance Day across Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion was once again encouraging the tradi- tional nwo minutes of silence (apparently in recent vears, we could only spare one minute). Some cities even: stopped public trains and buses, as they did when I was growing up. Twas reminded of the dra- matic impression that made, several years ago, when [ was hurrying through Heathrow on Naw. 21, only to see the world’s busiest airport freeze in silence at 11 a.m. While West Vancouverites young and old turned out to show their respect even on this rainy Remembrance Day just past, 1 was saddened to see how few merchants visibly recognize the sacrifice that so many made for the freedom of others. If stores must open for business on Nov. 1], could they not place some gesture of coramemoration in their win- dows, in between the Halloween) and Christmas decorations? The two stores FE noticed who did, were Trust ‘Travel in Ambleside and Dundarave Stationery. Trust Travel aceu- ally posted a notice they would be closed all day on Remembrance Day: “Lest we forget.” Lest we forget indeed. Here’s an idea. Why does- mt the legion sei some kind of conimemorative — pieces (wreaths, crosses with poppies ete.) to store owners? The merchants I asked ali agreed they’d be happy to support the legion in this way. Another idea: to individu- alize each window better, why net, with the heip of families, PHOTOS WITH SANTA BEGINNING SUNDAY, ‘NOVEMBER 21ST Christmas memories s begin with a ‘photo of your child with Santa. The memorial library already has the list of those who gave their lives for us. I know writers, artists and exhibit designers who would volunteer to help.
