VOCRK FILMS - BEST OF *97 Documentary worth the wait ‘These are my favorite films of the vear. It looks like we’ve entered the era of inde- pendent, character driven films, although, evervone neces a good disaster movie once in awhile. TAm Cuba Filmed in 1962, but not released until 1997 (thanks to Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese for digging it up) this Russian made film is a masterpiece, elegantly shot in B&W, and shot in three languages. We see the revolution unfol? through the eyes of different Cubans — a student instrumental in its beginnings, a hooker living in the slums, and a sugar cane farmer and his family. Beautifully filmed, with one of the longest and best choreographed hand-held camera shots I've ever seen, this should be a must-see for film students. No wonder it was shelved for so long. After all, with such talent lurking in Russia, the Americans had enough to worry about with the threat of communism let alone a takeover of the Hoilywood film scene. Mondo From director Tony Gatlif, who brought us the film Lateline Drum. A homeless boy (who truly was plucked from the streets to star in this film), teaches asmali town in France, and the audicnee, the meaning of dhe word “compassion”. The Full Monty The funnies: film [ve seen in along time — FW have to rem it to catch what f missed as Twas doubled up in my sear in fits of laughter. The Ice Storm A look ata couple of Nixen-era families in Cannecticat caught up ia that old morality play. | Jove the way that the childrca were portrayed with such intelligently writ ten parts. It’s. a great combination along with Ang Lee's directorial style, and an cerie soundtrack. Also, wonderful performances by all the cast, notably the children played by Tobey Meguire and Christina Ricci. Not to forget... LA Confidential, The Hanging Garden, Kolya, and Boogie Nights. Movies that Pm sorry I missed but look forward to see- ing... The Sweet Hereafter, The Pillow Book, When We Were Kings, A Summer in La Goulette and Broken English.
