THE rivalry between
the Ford Mustang and
Chevrolet Camaro has
been going on for 30
years — you’d think
these 30-some pony cars
would have grown up
by now.

Nope. Mustang enthusiasts
have been ticked for many
years by the fact that Chevy's
LT1 5.7-litre V8 has 285

horsepower whiie Ford’s 5.0-
lire OHV V8, and recently
the 4.6-litre OHC V8 engine,
had only 215 horsepower.

Automotive enthusiast
magazines were fond of point-
ing out how slow the
Mustang, was in a straight line
compared to the Camaro.
Die-hard Mustang enthusiasts,
who won't go to bed without
tucking in their Mustang fillys
for the night, couldn’t sleep
knowing that the new
Mustang just didn’t have
enough testerostone.

Ford’s SVT (Special
Vehicle Team) was endowed
with the task of redeeming the
Mustang’s honor. Most of the
work went into a new dual
overhead cam, 32 valve ver-
sion of the 4.6-litre V8 engine
which now develops gi-nor-
mous 305 horsepower, er 310
