Writer wrong about funding Dear Editor: Brent Mardon, in a recent letter to the North Shore News editor titled “WV computer program applauded,” states that per-capita student funding is the same for stu- dents in North and West Vancouver. He is wrong. West Vancouver has consistent- ly received tnore money per stu- dent than North Vancouver. For example, in the 1990-91 school year, West Vancouver received $5,481 per student while North Vancouver received $5,124. This resulted in a difference of $222 per student that North Vancouver did not receive. In this school year West Vancouver receives $48 more per student. This does not sound tike a large - amount, but it has resulted in West Vancouver receiving $820,840 more than North Vancouver. No wonder they can afford to buy computers and we can nat. While the difference in cur respective funding has decreased, inequity remains and Gur board's current deficit is only one of its cumulative effects. We have labored under a fund- ing formula that has placed our Students at a disadvantage when compared with those in West Vancouver. On the other hand, however, we are expected to provide the same Programs as West Vancouver. Consequently, for Mr. Mardon to state that North Vancouver cannot afford computer equipment os result of bad management is sim- ply incorrect. North Vancouver and West Vancouver can only hope that the provincial government does not exacerbate this inequity through amalgamation of our two school districts. | encourage Mr Mardon to stop attacking North Vancouver and to demand Education Minister Art Charbonneau that he provide equi- table funding for all students. no matter where they are taught.
