When a scooter-driver, a quadriplegic ina wheelchair or a ‘parcnt with a baby stroller approaches thé door, it stides open. . Many relatively modern.public buildings can seem like fortresses to the disabled, including North Vancouver City Council cham- bers. When four members of Access Awareness Unlimited wanted to attend a meeting there recently, Timaeus said: Mayor ’ Jack Loucks wound up apologiz- ing to the group because the build- ing was so unftiendly to scooters. “Tt took two councillors aad a member of the public to help us out,” Timaeus said. But the group is already having an effect. The City of North Vancouver has started consulting ~ with Access Awareness on prob- lems with sidewalks and roads. ... - Timaeus and two friends were “- also able to prove a point for another disabled North Shore citi- zen. They were asked by North Vancouver’s superintendent of _ public works and the foreman of “road maintenance to come out and test a particular dip in a sidewalk which the complainant has said caused his wheelchair to tip over. _ The city employees couldn’t sce “how this was possible, but when “two scooters and a wheelchair ‘all -got stuck there everyone agreed the dip needed to be reinstalled. . “They're working with me hand-in-glove and I’m tickled pink that I’m getting that kind of co-operation,” said Timacus. Capilano Mali manager Richard Wood also spent 90 mia- utes with Timacus fooking at the doors and discussing replace- meats. “He’s really going to go to town for us.” The owner of Ricky’s Restaur- ant in the same mall has pledged to install outdoor sensor doors, as has Walmart. The Lonsdale Quay has also agreed to consider the idea seriously. Timaeus is seeing the fruits of his labors and appreciates the fact that both the federa) and provin- cial governments seem to be push- ing for more access for the dis- abled. But there’s room for improvement on everybody’s part, particularly now, during Access Awareness Week (May 29-June 5). For example, he said, “Drivers don’t respect the scooter.” Even when scooter-riders have the light at the crosswalk, drivers roar past them, he said. “We are classed as pedestri- ans,” Timaeus said sternly. “That is very important to us.” When it comes to this organi- zation, the higher the profile, the better. With that in mind, some of its members have begun rehears- ing for a drill that they will be tak- ing into the PNE Parade on Aug. 20 on scooters and in wheelchairs. Timaeus is pleased to report that Sussex Insurance: has arranged through Commercial Union Canada to provide the $1 million insurance policy the group will need in order to participate in the event. ; To join Access Awareness Unlimited or participate in the drill, call Timacus and leave a name and number at 985-1262. He’d particularly like to hook ._ up with Price: “It’s because of her that we got this group going.’ North Van pot seizure nets plants and cash NEIGHBORHOOD RESI- DENTS are being credited for initiating a drug bust in Lynn Valley Wednesday night that netted police 100 marijuana plants and $1,200 worth of $20 dollar bills. North Vancouver RCMP Const. John McDougall said he was tipped off to the drug activity while on regular foot patrol near a rented house located at 2685 William Ave. “The first person came up to me and said, ‘I don’t know if this makes sense...’ They were a little embarrassed = coming up. Obviously, that tip panned out,” said McDougall. H He said he was unable to obtain a warrant to search the house on Monday, but with more informa- tion, a Justice of the Peace issued the warrant on Wednes sday. The house was empty when five RCMP special project unit officers and two fuot-patral officers entered the home at 6 p.m. McDougall said police found 100 marijuana. plants in pots with the top foliage cut off, They also found approximately four ounces of marijuana. “Itlooked like they just finished cleaning up. I think we missed it by one day,” said McDougall. Police want to talk to two North Vancouver men, age 22 and 24, in connection with the incident. The investigation continues.
