| COUNCILLOR ERNIE CRIST _has lived on the North Shore for 23 years and has served you on .District Council for 13 years. The people have elected Ernie again and again for very good reasons. “The mountains and rivers are our inspiration.” Ernie moved that this be the slogan for our Centennial, It was adopted and today is North -Van District's official motto. To quote Ernie, “It is a symbol which -binds us together and has been the force compelling me to work to preserve our North Shore environment and save it from destruction “by mindless greed and shortsighted gain.” CHIC DEMOCRACY: : “Ernie: when Council tried to deny him the right to be Acting _ Mayor because he has spcken out against Monster houses ~qhile in that position. “Don't ever tamper with civic democracy and expect to ,, Bet away with it.” ; ' NEIGHBOURHOODS: ' Never. expect something from-government unless you take part in government. “There is a revolution. brewing. More and more people are seeing local government not only as the most “important level of government: but also as the most ‘democratic, and accessible. It will start with people taking charge of their o1 own n neighbourhoods. ” Do: you i remember when they s0 sold N. V. District? istrict. Counéil sold our birchright when, they ‘signed he:new GVRD' Constitution. From now on population growth. in North-Vancouver will, to all intents and. purposes, be’ determined by the GVRD bureaucracy hell: bent on turning the North Shore into another West “End. This decision has to be reversed.” © i PROCEEDS FROM LAND "SALES: * Ir's not alright, Jack! » “There aie various forms of corruption. There i is stealing ‘but tliere is-also cheating the next generation. And | that’s what we're doing now when we sell off our land to "pay for road patching. ‘Money from land sales should be used ‘exclusively to build capital projects serving the community or put into the Heritage Fund and the interest used for this purpose. ‘Consider that all che land will be gone in about 10 years’ Move forward or move over. "This is the most incompetent Council I have ever known. Council business which used to take a week or two now. takes months and, in some cases, a year. Most members of Council are not aware of it because they have never known anything better.” - ‘ vt JOBS & ECONOMIC TWINING: Let us pluck the plems. ~ “I am in favour of economic twinning with Pacific Rim cities because it means more Jobs and helps our business community.” LOGGING AND OUR _ WATERSHEDS: Give the microbes enough time to do the job. “There was nothing wrong with our water quality when the squirrels were in charge. “It is a disgrace that the GVRD has allowed logging interests to destroy nature's ecosystem which has provided us with clean water for centuries.” MONSTER HOUSES: Don't change the character of my neighbourhood. “Monster houses are the single most divisive issue in the District. They divide the neighbourhoods and set people against people. Monster houses are not large homes on large lots. They are monstrosities on standard lots. An che last 12 years, we -have set up task forces, commissions, committees and have spent huge sums of taxpayers’ money to reduce the height. Twelve years ago it-was 28'. Today the maximum height is 32’! We need a District Council majority prepared to replace _talk with action and provide a solution to the problem.” THE ARTS: Art is that which makes the human heart beat higher. “I would like co do for the Arts what we have done for _recreation and for the same reasons. Pursuit of the Arts raises our sacial consciousness, enriches and gives meaning to our lives. We must increase our assistance to the Arts which now stands at a -meagre 45 cents per capita and is totally inadequate.” HEALTH & RECREATION: — | _ Health comes first!- . “Health costs are about to go through the roof, We can prevent this by encouraging people to use our rec facilities at reasonable fees to keep fit and healthy. I would like to extend Dollar Tuesday, which 1 proposed this year, to other days to encourage more people to use our clean and well run facilities.” ERNIE CRIST POLICE PROTECTION: Safety and protection is job number one. Ls “We have:been successful in reducing the crime rate d ’ because’of such excellent programs as Block Watch, § youth and school liaison, increasing the number of ca | : teams, bike teams and because of the enthusiasm and | help of our own RCMP and their volunteers. A salute and my gratitude goes to my fellow members of § the Police Liaison Committee, to all citizens who-are | participating and looking out for their neighbours, ro'the | RCMP and to the members of the auxiliary force”. ; NORTHLANDS GOLF COURSE: I am glad somebody had se some vision! “How can we lose! It is green and it is a park. It produces f E:. oxygen. It-povides us with an income and gives joy'to § millions. It; remains in our ownership and it suré beats f concrete mansions. I say again, how. can we possibly f lose?” COMMUNITY PLAN: Can we still see the mountains?: a “In che ‘early ’70s, along. with a handful of others; Lt succeeded in preventing the construction of a huge town f.”- centre on the Maplewood Mudflats. Soon after I-was first f elected, ] persuaded Council to draw up.a Community } Plan to limit our population growth and: preserve. our mountains for recreation. . ed Our low density character is now jeopardized by Council decision to rurn our autonomy:over to the GVRD. This | ! has to be reversed”. TRANSPORTATION: I want time to read the paper. 5 “The livable region will not be very livable unless we get § out of our ‘cars. We must have alternative forms of | , transportation ‘including a Rapid Transit link to the | ‘North Shore for the sake of ‘the environment, our ’ health, our sanity and our pocketbook.” 5 PROTECTION OF .THE ENVIRONMENT: Let them know we. cared, “| kept. my. promise 'to the voters. Myr motion ‘at District | : Council produced what is widely recognized as the most § advanced environmental bylaw in the country. You are f the sieve through which all other issues placed on-our § desks must pass.” (Ernie; after succeeding in having the f District hire a full time envircnmental control officer.) "FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL JUDGE US BY THE DEGREE OF PRUDENCE AND FORESIGHT WE HAVE DISPLAYED AND NOT BY WHAT IS CONVENIENT FOR THE DAY ERNIE UNDERSTANDS OUR PROBLEMS. HE IS A MAN WITH IDEAS AND SOLUTIONS. ‘LET HIM AGAIN BE YOUR VOICE AND CONSCIENCE WHERE iT COUNTS MOST... _ON NOVEMBER 20, YOUR VOTE REAL LY DOES COUNT |
