Cole: “| decided that | would go to my record collection and listen to my records to see what ! thought related to what we did and what sounded good — | kept coming up with Tom Waits albums. His (Cohen's) name is on most of them. ! decided to aim high — go for Tom Waits’ pro- ducer. We sent him our first re- cord and he loved it.” Music Now: Was the Tom Waits’ song Purpie Avenue written for this project specifically? Cole: ‘It was written a long time ago but it was never released on anything.” Music Now: What do you look for when you choose to record a song? Cole : “It seems to be harder to find lyrics that { agree with. By law you can change music as much as you like when you record, but with lyrics you can’t do a thing. it's harder to find lyrics.” Music Now: Can you think of a song that you might have wanted to record because of the melody but personal con- victions concerning lyrics kept you from doing so?
