The Dundarave Business Association supports events which serve to bring peo- ple together in a celebration of life and good-will, with the accent on good, clean fun. By Ann Hamilton Contributing Writer The fourth annual Dundarave Hoe-Down is one such event, and it’s scheduled for Friday, August 10, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Folks from near and far are invited to slip into their cowboy boots and 10-gallon hats and join in the fun. It's a popular family event, and this year, organizers are expec- ting approximately two to four thousand visitors. There will be plenty of room for participants to get into the swing of things, as COME OH DOWK AUGUST {04/90 Marine Drive will be blocked off between 24th and 25th Streets. Patti Leigh, Dundarave Business Association Vice- President and hoe-down coor- dinator, says the event is one way of thanking the community for supporting local merchants and businesses. Says Leigh, “It's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the unique community spirit that exists in Dundarave.” ENTERTAINMENT Jimmy Roy's Five Star Hillbillies, featuring Daniel Lapp, will kick things off with country and western tunes that are likely to appeal to all ages, getting peo- ple in the mood for participation. According to organizers, “It’s the type of music that really makes you want to join in. It’s great for dancing.” Over the years square dancing has become a favorite highlight of the hoe-down. Back by popular demand are the Swingtime Square Dancers and caller Doreen Sillery, who takes to the stage between perfor- mances by the band. Hoe-down visitors from previous years will remember Sillery as an entertainer who can stir things up. She clearly enjoys people, is passionate about life, and gets everyone involved in the dancing. Says Sillery, “It's leam on the spot dancing’. You don’t have to know a thing. Weil take you right through it.” Each year she extends great ef- fort in making herself available as a volunteer caller. On the morning of August 10, Sillery will be in Penticton taking part in a parade beginning at 10 a.m. Says Sillery, ‘Til be in the last car in the parade. When it's over, I'll just keep going. We did it last year. It took about five or six hours, and we made it to our home on the North Shore just in time to prepare for the hoe- down.
