This is a question you might ask yourself if you are in the market for a new carpet. As a consumer who buys carpet only occasionally, you might not be aware of what conditions Canedian carpet manu- facturers wilk not consider as defective. Many consumers will be surprised at unexpected conditions which appear in the carpet after your purchase — conditions which are quite normal. The following is an outlined list of conditions which are not con- sidered manufacturing defects; they are common carpet charac- teristics, © Floffing or Shedding: This is 2 normal condition caused by loose Particles of fibre which are trapped in the pile during production. They work to the surface where they col- lect as fluff. All carpets may exhibit this characteristic although it is most noticeable and of longer duration in cut pile construction. The fibre loss is actually minimal and will not affect wearability in any way. The phenomenon will diminish in time until it disappears almost en- tirely. © Missing Tufts: Occasionally tufts of pile at random are missing from the face of the carpet leaving small void areas. Reburling by a qualified mechanic is the simple corrective, and when done proper- ly, will be almost impossible to detect. Reburling will in 10 way be detrimental to the performance of the carpet. ° Crushing and Soiling: All carpet will soil and crush to some extent with use, depending upon the traffic and care it receives. Both conditions can be minimized by regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning. No claims are generally allowed on crushing, or soiling since these are not manufacturing defects. © Skeding: This visual effect is caused by the tips of the tufts reflecting light differently than the sides of the tufts. It is an esthetic quality in the design, not a defect. Examine the tufts carefully and you will usually see that they are of a uniform color. Smooth the pile in one direction to restore the one-color effect. When purchasing a carpet, ask your dealer if the style you prefer will show shading if this is objec- tionable to you. In its most serious form shading May resemble watermarking and be permanent in nature. But since its occurrence is independent of pile fibre type and carpet construc- tion it is not considered related to manufacturing. °Fading: Science has yet to de- velop a color that will not fade with time. All carpets will slowly lose some color due to natural and artificial forces in the environ- ment. *Sproating: Occasional tufts or ends of yarn extend above the normal pile height of the carpet. This is called sprouting. It is easily corrected by snipping off the ex- cess length, which will not harm the carpet. Never puli high ends; always cut them. ® Dimpling, Dishing or Depres- sions: Claims will not be consid- ered when the face of the carpet shows depressions that will not re- cover caused by the use of a quick release adhesive.
