Be prepared for driving

im winter conditions

THE B.C. Automobile Association
offers the following winter driving
advice to help motorists have 2
safe journcy:

© Before leaving fer a_ trip,
check your brakes, battery,
defroster, windshield wipers, tires,
exhaust system and anti-freeze.

© For beiter traction, use snow
tires and carry tire chains, and
reduce your speed when driving
with them,

© Avoid over-acceleration, and
over-braking. They can cause you
to skid on wet or icy surfaces.

@Use ‘squeeze braking’’ to
slow down or step. Squeeze down
on the brake peda! until vou feel
the wheels are about to lock; let up
and squeeze again. Move your foot
quickly but net hard.

*On long downgrades, don’t
ride your brakes. Use second and
low gear to help slow the car.

® Beware of icy patches on hills,
bridges, shaded areas, underpasses
and overpasses.

eWatch for and obey special
speed regulations and warnings on
road conditions.

® Remember that it takes longer
to stop on snow and ice, so allow
extra space between you and other
cars, and signal your intentions to
stop or turn much earlier than
normal.

© On long, snowy drives, period-
ically check for a build-up of ice or
snow under the fenders, which can
make steering difficult or even im-
possible,

© Brush all of the snow off your
car. (including the roof and hood
or it will blow onto the windshield)
and scrape the ice and snow from

area, start driving by pooelerating
gently and very graduall:

* A slightly open window will
keep you alert and dispel danger

BCAA reaches
milestone

THE BRITISH Columbia
Automobile Association expects to
pass the 500,000-member mark by
the end of January.

‘*We are the largest auto club in
Canada, and with this landmark
achievement, half a_ million
members will jook to us for service
and representation,” said John
Ratel, vice president of corporate
and public affairs.

BCAA began 83 years ago,
started by a group of Victoria
motorists interested in developing
their hobby and in helping each
other when breakdowns occurred.
They soon recognized the need to
act collectively to urge the gov-
emment to change horse and
buggy legislation and to encourage
road building.

“The role of the auto club has
not changed significantly since
1906,’’ commented Ratel.
“Although most members join for
emergency toad service, they
recognize thc benefit of belonging
to an association that represents
their interests in matters pertaining
to travel, insurance and motoring.
As our membership grows, so will
our ability to represent the inter-
