Slick streets cause accidents SOME AREAS of North Vancouver were without power briefly and North Vancouver streets saw a rash of traffic accidents when the first rain fell Monday after a lengthy spell of hot weather. North Vancouver City and District fire departments attended numerous collisions, and unusually slick streets backed up evening rush-hour traffic heading onto both local bridges. City firefighters were kept busy with six accidents Tuesday afternoon, while district firefighters bad three accidents -— one with only minor injuries — within one hour. Ten North Vancouver businesses were without power for just more than two hours after water caused a short circuit and subse- quent fire in a pole-top transformer. In West Vancouver, *‘We were all waiting for accidents, but none happened,” said fire department Lieut. Gerry McCuaig. Seymour demo forest reopens THE NORTH Shore's Seymour Demonstration Forest was reopened Tuesday to the public. Greater Vancouver Regional District spokesman Bud Elsie said the cool, wet weather Monday and Tuesday had reduced the forest fire hazard in the area. He said the situation would be re-evaluated daily, but added it would be unlikely that the forest would be reclosed in the foreseeable future. The entire 5,600-hectare forest, except for the area immediately around Rice Lake, was closed July 27 to public access following two weeks of hot, dry weather. Girl, gran found in NV A FODDLER and her grandmother hiding out for more than two weeks were discovered last week at a North Vancouver bed-and- breakfast, and the little girl is now home with her father. Langley RCMP said that three-year-old Dana Marie Stewart disappeared with grandmother Patricia Maconnell July 25 after the woman obtained 2 court injunction giving her custody of the child. By the time parents Doug Stewart and Deborah Stewart, sepa- rated last year, had the injunction overturned, the grandmother had fled with the child and a suitcase of clothes. After checking all the obvious places Maconnell might have taken the child, the family waited for the woman to give them some clue, which later came when she sent a money order from a North Vancouver address to the firm storing her belongings. North Vancouver RCMP officers assisted the Langley detach- ment in enforcing the parents’ custody order, and as the matter is a civil one, no charges will be laid. NW man guilty of fraud A NORTH Vancouver man was handed a suspended sentence and placed on probation for one year Thursday after he pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining food from a local restaurant.
