Bay HORSESHOE BAY and the Sewell family are almost syn- onymous. Four generations of Sewells have lived in this community, bringing to it a business sense and an en- trepreneurship which has attracted visitors from around the world. Dan Sewell and his family came to Vancouver in 1922 from Ed- monton where he had been involv- ed in the construction business. The move was decided upon after Dan had come to visit Horseshoe Bay. He and sons Art and Tom took construction jobs and then moved to Horseshoe Bay in 1931. Dan later acquired the Roedde family property from its then owner a Mr. Thorpe. Not only was this a water- front property but on the site was a lodge which Thorpe had moved from the location on which Troll’s now stands. This became a new business ven-— ture known as Whytecliff Lodge and attracted visitors such as Bing Crosby, Fred McMurray, Ray Milland, John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson. Most came to fish in Dan’s handmade clinker boats. busimess In 1933 he put a three-quarter horsepower Briggs and Stratton appliance engine into one of his boats and a new air-cooled engine had arrived. In 1938 Dan decided to hold a salmon derby with one of his handmade boats as first prize. This turned out to be the forerunner of today’s salmon derbies. With the continued growth of the boat servicing and rental business, Sewell closed the Whytecliff Lodge.during the ’50s. When Dan Sewell died in 1958 son Tom took over, and today grandson Danny runs the _day-to- day business. Not only has the marina con- tinued to grow, so has the salmon fishing. The first. privately-funded salmon Raise and Release project was undertaken by Sewell’s. This year approximately 30,000 young salmon will be released. With the approval of the biologists, part of this release will take place on Horseshoe Bay Day, June 21. On that date Sewell’s will also make available to the municipality their 63 Tarquin II for half-hour cruises. Dear Bride-to-be, >, Congratulations!
