Survey to record number of homeless

CANADIANS will have a much
clearer picture of homelessness in
Canada foliowing a ‘‘snapshot"’
survey being conducted by the Ca-
nadian Council on Social
Development (CCSD) Jan. 22.

On this day, more than 1,000
providers of shelter and services to
the homeless across Canada will
record the number of persons pass-
ing through their doors and the
services they provide.

The survey is the first attempt to
enumerate Canada's homeless.

At present, there is no official
tally; estimates range from 20,000
to 40,000, or between 0.1 and 0.2
per cent of the population. Survey
results will be made public in
Canada and around the world as
part of the United Nations tnter-
national Year of Shelter for the
Homeless.

Although homelessness has
traditionally been associated with
transient men, there is evidence
that it is an increasingly serious
problem for young people, women

that in 1984, 36 per cent of its
clientele were under 25.

chronically homeless are able-
bodied, but lack the education,
work training, and job experience
