RES LOCAL MOUNTAINS are marshalling armies of ski guides and convoys of snow grooming cquipment in preparation for the 1986-87 ski season. The North Shore's three moun- tains, long enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for their proximity to the Lower Mainland and_ their good quality novice-to-expert runs, are hoping for an improvement over the erratic 1985-86 season. With Cypress Bow! Recreations Ltd. investing close to $500,000 in night lighting for the mountain last year, ail three local mountains now offer full night skiing. Seymour, North Vancouver’s family ski hill, was privatized in 1984 and its ski facilities taken over by Mount Seymour Resorts Ltd. In 1985, the company invested about $1 million into a major overhaul of the mountain's opera- tion that included installation of a new 1,400-foot Mueller double chair, which has a capacity of over 1,450 skiess per hour. Seymour ski director Wayne Wong says a lot of skiers think of rope tows when they think of Seymour, ‘‘but we only have the Goldie rope tow now. The new chair has really worked out well. Anyone who has not, should come up and give it a try.” In addition to the new chair, Seymour has added new night lighting to further improve visibili- ty along main trails. The mountain has also groomed and added new trails. On the refreshment end of the mountain’s operation, Wong says Seymour’s cafeteria now has a beer and wine licence. Wong adds that the mountain will host a Dec. 10 waiters’ race to raise money for the Rick Hansen World Tour. Seymour has about 20 desig- nated ski runs. : By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter At Grouse, the mountain's ski school will continue to emphasize its overall quality in general and its classes for intermediate skiers in particular. Ski school general manager Or- nulf Johnsen says growth in the mountain’s Midway intermediate ski school has been dramatic over the past few years. “Two years ago, we had 100 SKI BLACKCOMB THIS WINTER AND DISCOVER 7TI? He added that the small classes, which in the midway course are limited to five skiers, are another reason for the school's success over the years. About 13,000 skiers enroll in the mountain’s ski school each year. Grouse restaurant facilities and its eight major runs have been overhauled during the summer. Cypress Bowl Recreations Ltd. (CBRL) has renovated its cafete- é RTS PREPARE ria, added a liquor licence and come up with Bobby’s Lounge, in addition to extensive summer grooming that has removed large rocks and other debris from Cypress Bowl’s 15 major runs, There is also a new licenced sundeck at the mountain's main parking lat complex. Says CBRL assistant marketing manager Bart Imler, ‘‘We offer some of the best and most varied ski terrain of the local moun- tains.”” At Blackcomb, the mountain's management has increased seating See paga 41 if NEWS photo submitted THE NEW facilities at Tyax Mountain Lake Resort take shape.
