MUSICIANS WHO have only had
the opportunity to test their
keyboard skills on the piano are
getting an opportunity to try out a
new instrument (or rather, an old
one) at Capilano College this fall.

A harpsichord area of study has
been added to the music program,
and is being taught by local harp-
sichordist Doreen Oke. :

The harpsichord was the fore-
runner of the modern piano, and §
was the prime keyboard instrument 4
used from the 16th to 18th cen-

turies. In a piano, sound is pro- §

reminiscent of a harp. SIMPLICITY

Capilano College is the only col-
lege in the Lower Mainland to own
a harpsichord. Acquired in 1974,
the instrument is a copy of a
Beigian harpsichord made by Ed-
ward R. Turner.

With the reorganization of the
music department in the late ’70s,
Cap’s harpsichord fell into disuse,
until Doreen Oke’s proposed this
year to start a harpsichord pro-
gram.

Capilano is now offering a
harpsichord primary and second-
ary area of study within the private
music instruction courses, and Oke YOUR
is hoping to expand the college’s CHOICE
offerings to include accompanying § ; GULAR)
classes and workshops dealing with &
performance practices in the
Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Oke studied music at UBC and
the Conservatoire de Musique in
Montreal, and teaches at UNC and
Douglas College. She has given
