Fish farm rejected

A VANCOUVER man's
hope of setting up a fish farm
on the Sunset Marina water-
front again failed to get West
Van District council hooked
tecently.

Ambleside beach face many
water hazards and would
benefit. from a boardsail
patrol, West Van District
council heard recently.

Jay Lundy, Canadian
boardsail patrol coordinator,
said the intent of the plan is
to educate the public about
safe windsurfing practices,
not act as a_boardsailing
police force.

He said that a pilot project
Jast summer at Ambleside in-
dicates that a ‘‘patrol is
merited ... as there is often
conflict between swimmers,
boaters and boardsailors."*

Lundy said that if council
approves the patrol program
it would cost the municipality
$850 for an information
board and 10 patrollers’
uniforms.

Alderman Mark Sager said
he though the proposed pro-
gram would be ‘‘great’’ for
Ambleside. But before coun-
cil agrees to the request by
Lundy, it must first be
discussed by municipal
officials.

David Whiffin’s plan to
raise salmon in sea pens was
vetoed because no long-term
municipal plans have been
drafted for the Sunset
Marina area.

Earlier proposals by Whil-
fin for a fish farm in the
Pasco Road district were also
shot down due to conflict
with the area’s residents.

Steve Nicholls, West Van's
planning director, said the
Sunset proposal, although
less disruptive than the
previous plans, still has some
problems.

“Remaining concerns in-
volved the effects on the

operation of severe winter
storms and the various issues
respecting the fish farm itself
which the various federal and
provincial approving
authorities may raise.

“In addition, the farm
would require a water lot

Nicholls,

He suggested that before
council approves such a plan
as Whiffin’s, long-term plans
for the marina should be
drafted.

Council backed Nicholls‘
recommendation that the
plan be rejected.
