Over thirty years ago, Lynn Valley’s fore- fathers also fought over the location and construction of a community hall that would become a focal point in their community. Finally they decided on a site and by their ewn hand constructed the Lynn Valley Hall. It was ‘therefore fitting that a motivated community met at the hall to discuss the .. proposed new facility. Most agreed’ that a full-facility centre is -- required. (Although no one was too sure what a full facility includes.) They also agreed the facility must meet the needs: of youth, a long-recognized problem in Lynn ‘Valley. But they were split on where to locate the - facility. ‘The united front broke at this point, torn between locating the facility in the Karen . . Magnussen area or at the present Lynn Vailey Hall site. On the one hand, the Karen Magnussen site is cost efficient and offers space for ex- ., pansion and parking. But on the other, the ’ visible Lynn Valley Hall site is still the his- toric focal point of the community. _. The real test of the residents’ community ‘ .spirit will be to decide on one site. - If. the Lynn Valley residents can’t reach a ‘consensus, they’re bound to disappoint Lynn -Valley’s forefathers who knew how to get the Job done. One of North Vancouver’s School Trustees, Ross Regan, rushed to endorse the “Full Nielsen’? as the hold to wrestle down the left wing monsters. Hasn’t this world seen enough of the terrible fallout of tug-o-war between right and left wings? Haven’t we had enough suspension of democratic principies in various coun- tries, in the name of keeping out the ‘‘bad guys’? — who are simply the other guys. If you are right wing they are the left wing, and vice versa. Democratic principles are held dear in this country... - and in this province... and ought not to be the ball! in some bizarre soccer match between the fixed and im- movable mentalities of right and left wings. To ali the ‘‘gangs’’, let’s say ‘“‘enough is enough!” There is too much at stake here to let the stubborn self-styled ideologues wage war on each other using precious territory like educa- tion, health care, democratic structures and and processes as* the: battle grounds. Don S, Williams North Nancouver Changes to apartheid — must take place soon Dear Editor: Dispelling the gloom, doom, and communism theories that have become common reading fare on South Africa is far easier than attempting to explain the complexities of that country’s internal problems in a summarized form. Ms. Biaskovich is absolutely right. Why can we not have some “almost pornographic’ pic- tures of old women, something that old men can identify with. Jack Warren North Vancouver PS. One factor is painfully clear: Changes in the apar- theid system must take place soon. Objective analysis shows that all South Africans would benefit and be totally protected if changes are introduced by a strong and stable governme- nt. The subsequent period of change and adaptation would of necessity need to be guided by an, authoritative hand if anar- § chy and chaos are to be avoided. There appears to be a need for carefully considered in- tervention by concerned Western nations and incen- tives must be found that will facilitate the advance of that beautiful country: while en- suring that it remains under the firm control of an order- ly and qualified government. P. du Plessis North Vancouver Politician wrong Dear Editor: We protest the outrageous * suggestion thai video tapes should be available in our libraries. My husband, as an educator for 35 years, and J are appalled that a self- interested politician thinks he can enhance his wife's and others’ business by clamping down On our freedom. Next he will say you shouldn’t have books in the library. I hope West Van doesn’t allow a mere politician to say what we can and can’t have in our libraries. Hilary Bursitl-Hall West Vancouver
