NEW YEAR'S Day is the day
that most people quit smok-
ing, says Shirley Thompson,
Smoking Cessation. Coor-
dinator for the British Col-
umbia Lung Association, but
this year, thousands of
British Columbians will quit
on January 16,

January 16 is Cold Turkey
Day in British Columbia and
the British Columbia Lung
Association will again be ask-
ing cigaretie-smoking public
to go “Cold Turkey"" for the
day, says Thompson.

She adds that Cold Turkey
Day takes a light-hearted ap-

proach to a very serious sub-
ject and focuses on helping
smokers to quit ina positive
way while encouraging
nonsmokers to give their sup-
port by acting as a ‘‘buddy’’
to smokers trying to quit.

A survey conducted on a
sample of people who went

Cold Turkey in 1983 shows
that 33 per cent of them suc-
cessfuly kicked the habit,
with a higher percentage of
men than women remaining
free of cigarettes, says
Thompson. She added that
half of the peaple who went
back to smoking were smok-

before.

Thompson says that the
Lung Association has free
materials available to help
those people quitting ‘‘Cold
Turkey”, including survival
tip sheets, pledge cards,

posters, and guidance tips for

buddies.
