A9 - Sunday, April 1, 1984 - North Shore News Philosophy is not school board's job Dear Editor: In this tome of severe economic restraint, border- ing on crisis levels, | find it incomprehensible that neither the West Vancouver School Board or the North Vancouver School] Board did not immediately grasp at the opportunity of augumenting their revenue by leasing one of their currently vacant schools to the North Shore Independent School Society. By their own most vocal ad- mission the school boards need additional revenue. The school board's ‘*fears’’ would seem to fall ito two distinct and dif- ferent categones. Firstly, the somewhat justified concern that enroll- ment in the North Shore Public Schools will drop with the opening of the North Shore Independent School. Whilst I can, to some extent, sympathize with this pro- blem, | fully believe that the opening of the N.S.1.S. will be a fact of life in September, or shortly thereafter, whether or not the .North Shore School Boards wish to rent one of their currently empty schools. The second, and in my opi- nion, most serious ‘‘fear’’ is the ‘‘fear’’ based on so called ‘‘philosophi ” grounds. A ' great deal of emphasis is be- ing put on this point of view by certain BCTF and allied individuals including most of the trustees. it seems that this philosphy subscribes to the ideal that the independent private Collins ill-informed Dear Editor: If Mr. Collins ts attemp_ ting to make a point regar- ding his concept of native rights, he is probably doing a good job — for ul-informed, irrational people. Anyone else, however, can only conclude that he has done little or no research into the areas of land claims, social conditions or even In- dian politics (by confusing SWC 515995 Dolby & Meta! I am appalled that the West Vancouver Board has had the unbeliable temerity to set themselves up as protectors of our philosophical well being. This is definitely noi the duty of the school board. They are elected by us the taxpayers. It is their duty to manage our public schools, maintain and improve the standard of education and operate these schools within the allocated budgets. They therefore are obhgated to ensure that they utilize every cent in a correct and businesslike magner. Andrew Gilbert West Vancouver DISPLAY 980-0511 au SVC 5649 VHS — 8 hr.
