NICARAGUAN GOVERNMENT officials say
they are facing an 8,000-strong force of rebels in
the northern area of the country.

The governmnent said
the guerilla forces are car-
rying a two-prong assault on

government forces, the
biggest move yet against the
Sandinista government.

Military leaders in the
left-wing country told a news
conference the guerillas had
attacked from neighboring
Honduras and that they were
being backed by the
American Central In-
telligence Agency.

They also claimed the
southern port of San Juan
del Norte was being attacked
by another group, based in
Costa Rica.
