A8 - Sunday, June 26, 1983 - North Shore News Gl mailbox a paeery Dear Editor: Having followed the news coverage of Jim Keegstra’s teaching and the community of Eckville, Alberta’s reac- tion, the B.C. Human Rights Commission feels compelled to bring to your attention that combatting racism is not solely the responsibility of a Human Rights Commission. The responsibility is univer- sal. The circumstances that allow the Mayor of the com- munity of Eckville, Alberta to teach anti-semitism without comment for 14 years must be of concern to all thinking adults. The Commission has writ- ten to all school parents’ committees and = school boards in the province to re- emphasize the responsibility each of us has to protect our Watershed must be left alone Dear Editor: Regarding your comments m the paper about the City of North Van. giving up its water-shed and water supp- ly, I would like to encourage the taxpayers to take a closer look before voting. This water supply is priceless and would be lost, most likely forever, if the change is made. If it is turn- ed into a park and recreation area, there would be con- siderable cost now, and an- nually, for its upkeep. Also, the G.V. Water ’ Board would have to be paid for the water we now get free. If some money was spent to repair the flood damage. and do _ other necessary work, the City would rarely have to buy water from the Water- Board. The Lynn Canyon area is still adequate for hikers. The North Shore is well supphed with areas for outdoor activities. The City water supply is like a gold mine, and more so as the years go on. J. Cripps, North Vancouver Second language? —Try Esperanto Dear Editor: I was very interested to read your column which ap- peared on June 1 about bil- ingualism in Canada and language problems in the world in general. When so much effort and money is spent on translation in Canada with two official languages, one can imagine how translation problems are magnified in organizations such as the EEC where 6 or 7 languages must be considered. The advantage of a world language as a second language for international interchange becomes morc and more obvious. For political reasons it is difficult for any of the cxisting major languages to be accepted as the international language by the world powers. As you mention, English is actually losing ground pro- portionally to other languages, partly because the population growth is smaller in English speaking countnes in comparison to lands where Spanish is spoken. On the Indian sub- continent the use of English is diminishing for na tionalistic reasons. As one who 1s interested in languages, Esperanto, the planned second language among others, tt is always a pleasure to read a well researched article on this fascinaling (to me) subject Jean Fremont, Information Officer, Esperanto World Congress Committee North Vancouver it’s summer fun-time. Too often, news coverage of incidents, and subsequent commen- tary, enjoy an undeserved comfort in the fact that the situation did not arise local- ly. We believe that a general unwillingness to speak out is what allowed Jim Keegstra to espouse his belief in a Jewish conspiracy in his classroom for 14 years. The question is whether similar Situations exist or could hap- pen in British Columbia. How would an individual British Columbian deal with Racism everyone’s business a Jim Keegstra in his or her church, school or city coun- cil? The Commission would like to be confident that the teaching of anti-semitism, racial supremacy or racial hatred does not and could not occur in British Colum- bia undetected. The Com- mission is making itself available to work with any concerned community to ad- dress intolerance and bigotry wherever it may surface. Charles B.
