‘women _- Award-winner gives credit to teacher FROM PAGE C1 interest and encouragement provided the stimulus for his endeavors. *‘I was very lucky that all my teachers have been very good and I had a good relationship with all of them.” He admits he probably presented something of a challenge to his teachers from time to time as well. “Sometimes the’d have to remember what they learned 10 years ago,” said the modest, soft-spoken student. He singles out three teachers especially who devoted a lot of time and energy to him during his two years at Carson Graham: Ray Marshall who taught him chemistry, Kurt Hueftlein who taught him physics and George Sparling, now retired, who taught him math. “They made things in- teresting. They challenged me. Their encouragement was very important to me.” While he did well in all his subjects (winning eight awards in grade 12 alone), science and mathematics are his specialties and where his primary interests lie. It’s too early yet to set specific career goals, but research in ‘these fields at the university or perhaps in industry are definite possibilities. NO OTHER For the past two summers Thomas has worked as a lab assistant at MIN-EN laboratories on the North Shore. Among his duties: analyzing water and soil samples for flouride content and fire assaying to deter- mine the amount of gold in rock samples. He was also shown how to use an atomic absorption spectrophotometer which is used to detect and analyse minute amounts of a certain element in a soil or rock sample. “I got quite a bit of ex- perience working in the chemical lab,” said Thomas. “But at the moment, I'm more interested in physics than chemistry.” In grade 11 he was co- winner of the Canadian Association of Physicists prize examination, which earned him a tour of the physics department at Simon Fraser University and an “engineer SFU library card. His hobbies include astromony, photography (in which the claims “limited success”) organic chemistry experiments, chess. (he organized a club at Carson Graham) and art. Two of his acrylic paintings grace the family dining room in their home on Vienna Crescent. Thomas lives with his mother, Jackie, his father, Robert, a professional with Kennco Exploration, and his 14-year- old sister Susan, who seems to be following in her brother's footsteps, winning scholastic awards at Balmoral Junior Secondary School. - Thomas drives to UBC, leaving about 7 a.m. to beat the traffic, for an 8:30 class each morning. He's taking 164 credit hours instead of the usual 15 and his subjects include two maths, physics, Do you want to sing? The Village Voices on the North Shore are looking for men.
