For a while Monday night
it looked like North Van-
couver's proposed water-
front park might be named
after the City’s twin in Japan
but the idea was rejected by
North Vancouver Cily
council.

Alderman Stella Jo Dean

said the park should be
named Chiba Park lo
commerate the 10th an-

sary of the twinning of
the two communities.

The idea was seconded by
Alderman Gordon Cross but
other City alderman said that
it was premature to name the
park since it still had to be
deeded to the City and built.

pair of harbour seals, split
the council into the seal and
otter supporters.

Alderman Payne said that
seals were appropriate
because they were the only
animals on the list to be
found in the City of North

to give the Japanese city the
choice of the animals it
would like for its new
municipal zoo, from a list
suggested by City staff.

animal to Chiba was quickly
ammended to a pair as
Alderman Gordon Cross
pointed out that “things go
better in two's.”

“Maybe they'll send us a
breeding pair of Japanese
stone lanterns,”” Cross
quipped when the question
of what gift it would be
