22 — Wednesday, July 22, 1998 — North Shore News Youth career help offered Seymour centre open all summer The Seycove Youth Career & Employment Centre (YCEC) is, for the first time, open to the community’s youth throughout the sum- mer. Located in the student services area in Seycove Community School, the cen- tre received sponsorship from Investors Group, Human Resources Development Canada, Seycove Community School, and Seycove Community Programs Society to advance to a year-round operation in providing resources and sup- port to youth in terms of career and employment con- cerns. The centre hopes to pro- vide youth with assistance and guidance in establishing post-secondary and carcer plans. Aiming at serving youth in the geographic area east of the Seymour River, the Seycove YCEC wants to offer an environment that is friendly and familiar — important factors that influ- ence the likelihood of youth returning in the future for further needs. Youth are encouraged to drop-in during the week. The Centre is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ‘ Resources are available on _ topics that many youth may _ have growing — concerns about, including post-sec- ondary institutions and their programs, international stu- dent exchanges, scholarships, bursaries and other financial aid and apprenticeship pro- grams. Youth will also be able to access current labor market information and research eireers that interest them to sie What exactly cach involves, Three computers have been made available for the career centre’s use, and thev are equipped with internet Centre include sessions on resume writing, cover letter writing and interview skills. The Seycove YCEC has posted local volunteer and employment opportunitics for those who are interested. Ir is hoped that the carcer centre will serve as a fink between local business and local youth. Therefore, focal business are encouraged to approach the Centre with — their - employment needs. Joyee Lau, a 1997 gradu- ate from Seycove, was recently hired as the coordi- nator for the Seycove YCEC and she is on duty for the hours listed above.
