OKAY, now let’s be honest — that New Year’s resolution about getting back in shape is but a vague memory and with a bit of luck will be gone complerely real soon. The trouble is winter is nearly over and most of us know if we're in guod phesical shape we feel and look better, thereby being able te take full advantage of the wonderful summer season here in par- adise. Many individuals still strug- gle to stay with any sort of real exercise program and aren't quite sure why everything seems to come unglued after what looked like a promising opportunity to turn the tables and finally get back into the kind of condition they deserve for themselves. As a physical trainer and coach | see many adults get involved in programs with great enthusiasm only to drift away after several weeks, or even months, of making a real effort to get on track. Everyone understands at an intellecrual level the impor- tance of physical, emotional and mental wellness, but with all che distractions of modern day life around us. we secm to get side-tracked, and after making the necessary BS excuses to ourselves, end up back at square one. Unfortunately, some will get the chance to truly under- stand the importance of con- trallable wellness only when their doctor tells them about the diabetes just diagnosed, or when recovering in intensive care after a stroke, heart attack or some other “popular” dis- ease in Our so-called “advanced and developed society.” Some keys in achieving suc- cess with exercise (other than attitude, determination and strength of character, of course) include setting specific goals and not biting off more than you can chew. The old Proverb of a thousand mile journey starting with a single step holds true in ail areas of human development, and ath- letic training is no different. Start slowly with a custom designed program in the area of finess you enjoy or would like to become more proficient Clover Leaf sockeye in. Set a specific goal for use as a measurement of your achievement and get going. One method of monitoring progress and giving yourseli'a meaningtul shor at success is by following the SMLALRT. pro- gram. It works as follows: @ Specific: Pinpoint what vou want fo do. @ Measurable: Give it a num- ber. How much? How many? How long? Where? @ Achievable: Deter-mine your current baseline and work up from there. B® Realise: Consider the facts and your current situation. Be Sure Not fo set reo many goals atone time — vou want to make sure vou can accomplish them. @ Time frame: Shorter is casier. When are you going to do it? Is it possible now?
