poised to tackle the touchy
subject of smoking in public
places.

But don’t expect a quick resolution

to the problem that has divided sever-
al Lower Mainland municipalities,
including the chree on the North
Shore.

The issue came before council on
Monday in the form of correspon-
dence trom the Canadian Cancer
Society.

During discussion of the corre-
spondence, Coun. Barbara Sharp pro-
posed a bylaw that would recognize

Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB)
regulations regarding smoking in the
workplace in the city.

The new WCB regulations will
either prohibit or severely restrict
smoking in’ the workplace.
Restaurants, pubs, and clubs will have
exemptions undl Jan. 1, 2000.

The proposal found widespread
approval on council.

Coun. Barbara Perrault said she has

ing regulations.

with tougher regulations, said
Perrault, one of several councillors to
voice support.

recently announced
funding for a North
Vancouver child-care
facility.
Funding of $283,942 will
bé- used to build, equip and
furnish the new Parkgate
Child Care Centre.

Vancouver District.
The Parkgate centre wil!
‘ accommodate 40 children,

age. The centre will offer a
variety of child-care programs

Shore. The service will also

The grant was among 19,
totalling close to $2 million,
awarded through the . child-
care facilities and equipment
grant program. The funding
will help to create 504 new
licensed child-care spaces in
B.C. communities.

Since 1992, more than
2,000 child-care spaces have
been created by the program.
