Ef toh fa SS Se SS OS College, com Holography boundaries prodded at Cap College By Michael Becker News Editor THERE are laser-dri- ven ghosts in the machine at the Capilano College physics holography research lab. Physics, art and design are merging to advance holographic technology. Some of the images creat- ed are quite astonishing. The local effort is being conducted from a converted lab storage area and physics dark room attached to a col- + lege physics lab and class- room, The project initiated this summer is a good example of . how business and academic communities are combining | resources in pinched 1990s. - The lab was equipped through loans and donations from companies. Major sup- port was provided by The Holographic Studio Ltd., Holocrafts, and General Holographics Inc. — - The college provides the overhead for the operation. Although students aren’t involved hands-on in the lab, they'll. benefit by observin research in progress. The la will interact with other col- lege departments and com- mercial contracts may be part of the mix. The holography research lab’ is run by Capilano College physics lab supervi- sor Bernd Simson, Bowen Island holographic artist Melissa Crenshaw © and physics faculty member Dr. Stan Greenspoon. Said Bernd Simson, “Our immediate goal is to synthe- size holograms from video, which means taking each perspective ofa subject, going all the way around, taking each and putting all of the holograms together 30 you see one continuous hologram from this. We'll be able to have some motion from that.” Simson has already con- ducted corporate research on making holograms from video through his company, General Holographics Inc. Hologram watches and key chains are examples of some of the product his company puts out to consumers. Melissa Crenshaw brings an artistic imagination to the project. Crenshaw is a past recipient of the Shearwater Foundation (NY) award for outstanding work in art “ The potential for breakthrough research at the college is enormous. ” holography. The potential for break- through research at the col- lege is enormous. Advances in computer technology are making new things possible on the holo- graphic frontier. Explains Crenshaw, “Holography has been severely limited in what kinds of objects or scenes you could record. You cither back research had to do very heavy station- ary objects, like things made out of. plaster, or you could do people, but you had ts have an extensive pulse laser and there are not many of those around, “There was- | n't a way to get the imaginary world into a hologram. There was- nt any way te get live footage into a hologram. Whatever ideas or images you can create with a com- puter you can then bring into this whole optical sys- rem to produce a holograph- ic hard copy,” she said. How do holograms work? “It’s like a window that remembers,” said Simson, “It simply remembers what was there before. It’s: like looking through a window. He AUARD Rate Watch ... A hologram holds the image in the form of interference patterns. The patterns are made on film when part of a split laser beam reflected from = an object interferes with the other part sand the: film is illuminated. Said Crenshaw, “Holography has a very huge data storage capability because it records retraction and reflection. you end up with such high resolution and fidelity in the images.” That’s why.
