Filipino sailor beaten with hockey stick, accused man testifies at trial

A NORTH Yancouver native calmly
described the brutal beating of a
Filipino sailor two years ago and
claimed his buddy broke a hockey
stick hitting the screaming victim,
who later died.

Jacob testified that the fallen siifor got up
and continued running, until the sailor
jumped off a bridge near 24th Street and
Lloyd Avenue in Nerth Vancouver.

Jacob. 27. is charged with second-degree
murder in connection with the Oct. 24. 1997,
death of Jovito Bazuna,

in connection with the Oct. 24, 1991, inci-
dent.

Ryan Jacob. dressed in a grey suit. white
dress shirt and black and prey tie. told his
accountof the fatetul night to Mr. Justice
Kenacth Meredith.

He testified that he. Jacobs and Moody
befriended (wo Filipino sailors in North

offered to drive them back to theytr ship:

“t could see Todd swinging the stick and
Baguna running.” Jacob calmly recounted. “I
heard Baguni screaming.”

Jacob told the jury be pursued Baguna toa

looked back at me... and jumped off the
edge, He was faving in the creek face-down
and motionless ... P grabbed his wallet and
