Those big stacks are slash piles waiting until fall to be burned. In Qciober £989, when stash was burned in the Chelsea subdivision above Chairlift Road, the air on Marine Drive in Dundarave was filled with smoke ali day and Jong into the evening. Our neighbor, North Vancouver District, does not allow any land-clearing fires, and requires developers to chip all slash and take it to the Riverside Drive Transfer Site for composting. Why should West Vancouver residents and everyone else downwind have to. breathe polluted air so that developers can make even more profit on half- million dollar iots? Is West Vancouver Council go- ing to continue to allow residential slash burning as the forest is cut for the construction of the antici- pated 4,000 new homes on the mountainside? Or will councii decide to contribute to the GVRD Clean Air Strategy by banning such burning in West Vancouver? ‘Katharine Steig West Vancouver Fill in Lynn Canyon pools Dear Editor: In the past few weeks we have been bombarded in the North Shore News by the recent deaths in the Lynn Canyon poois and the various solutions to the problem. Recently North Vancouver District Council endorsed ‘numerous safety measures in- cluding more unsightly fences, rangers, rescue teams and task forces educating the public as to the dangers, and so on, a typical bureaucratic solution at great ex- Pense to the taxpayers. I personally see a very simple solution: that is, eliminate the source of temptation for our div- ing youths. For the cost of a few sticks of dynamite we can blast a channel for the water to escape from the pool or just fill the pool in with boulders. Either one would eliminate the source of danger, avoid future in- cidents and the canyon would still retain its natural setting. Stanley Dzuba North Vancouver DRAPERIES BY S.
