Bartholomew planning Belgium trip From page 18 “t like to get the feel of coun- tries through collages of photographs.”’ One such collage, titled “Lifestyles of the Ordinary Arab,” was recently shown at the West End Community Centre and again with other groupings at the North Vancouver District Municipal Hail. Just last summer, Bartholomew, still considered an amateur, entered the Pacific National Exhib- ition’s photography show, netting three first place ribbons. Born in Ontario, she studied art at the University of Alberta and the Ontario College of Art, before going to work at the cancer clinic in Toronto, where she was trained in medical photography. That work brought Bartholomew to Vancouver, to set up the medi- cal photography department at the General Hospital’s cancer clinic. Those four months gave her a pas- sion for the coast that kept her here. Bartholomew’ first exposure to life on the North Shore left a lasting impression. She was invited to spend “the best Christmas I've ever had” at Dr. Ethelyn Trapp’s West Vancouver home Klee Wyck, now known to many as an arts centre. She has now called West Van- couver home for almost 40 years. Her interests in photography and art didn’t coalesce until two years ago when her interest was sparked by West Vancouver Community Centre art classes which featured art historian Sheits Urbanek. That “brought it all back to Uhy notsstopin fora from 7) Cappucimo and a homemade clessert ? wake Zn 227 0hgole DEWE KESt VANCOWEL, Wb SESE A me,” she said, again feeling a desire to travel and explore artistic images. She started to travel and has made it to Greece, Thailand (where she photographed the daily activities of Buddist monks), Turkey, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, and New Mexico. Her trips have included some daring adventures, such as seven weeks of travelling alone in Egypt, Israel and France. “It was a bit difficult because you really aren’t safe in some countries — | was almost killed a couple of times,” she said. The beginning of that trip should have been an omen: after lost itineraries, late flights and being accused of being a smuggler (the authorities destroyed one camera), she finally arrived two days late and had to catch up with the tour group she was travelling with to — begin the trip. Although Bartholomew often travels with groups, she particular- ly enjoys joining archeologists, she isn’t afraid to travel alone, even though at times it seems she should have been. After leaving the tour group, Bartholomew got stuck in Israel (it was Easter and nothing was mov- ing). When she finally got a bus to Egypt, she arrived late at night and couldn't find her hotel. Calling for a taxi in too public a place could have ended in an ab- duction by thieves posing as cab drivers — if it weren't for a last minute rescue. Another ‘‘drastic experience’ came after she convinced a local man to take her home to his village. She paid him to be her guide and found the trip interest- ine because they didn’t travel with Roll of Tekka Jina Roll Maki Sushi Combo..... But, «what he didn’t tell her was that on the way back he would abandon her, claiming that he couldn’t walk with her because he didn’t have a guide’s licence {it might not have mattered if they hadn't been in a bad section of town at night). Bur it’s in those back streets that the best photo opportunities arise, she maintains. Bartholomew admits she is not interested in photographing peo- ple as subjects, even though one of her best known works depicts the Arabic people. The recent shows were nat possible, said Bartholomew, without a great deal of heip, primarily from close friend Silvia McFayden-Jones, whom she met in Greece, and who helped to co-ordinate the shows. For future projects, Bar- tholomew has numerous ideas, including trying to sell some of her work, First on the agenda is a trip to Belgium this month. Bartholomew said she’s always wanted to visit Belgium because of old stories she’d heard about her great- great-grandfather having married into royalty there. She has several ideas for photographic collages and says she wants to try avoiding frames all together by designing ‘‘clay bits’’ to join the individual pieces into one image. Having concentrated primarily on other countries, Bartholomew wants to photograph Canadian historic images, especially grave- yards, churches and old homes, some subjects that are already prominent in her work.
