" new port Patrick -Reid chairman. REID APPOINTED PATRICK REID was named chairman of the board of the Vancouver Port Corporation (VPC) last week by the federal Minister of Transport Doug Lewis. Reid will succeed Captain Hec- tor D. Perry as VPC chairman and as director of the Canada Ports Corporation. The appoint- ments come into effect Dec. 20. A career diplomat and interna- tional executive, Reid is best known for his role as commis- sioner-general of Expo 86 in Van- couver. Perry was appointed VPC chairman in December of 1984 following a Jong career in the deep-sea cargo transport field. “We are looking forward to a smooth transition — and business as usual in the port of Van- couver,’’ said Perry. PLAYGROUND FUNDED THE CAPILANO Elementary School Parent Councit has receiv- ed approval of a $16,000 GO B.C. grant to assist in the construction of a multi-purpose recreational playground, Provincial Secretary Howard Dirks announced recent- ly. Angus Ree, MLA for North Vancouver-Capilano said the North Vancouver Parks Board is contributing $22,000 towards the project, with the Parent Council covering the balance. “The school is located in a neighborhood with little in the way of recreational facilities, and no park space available for im- provements. The benefits will be shared by both the school and the community,’’ Ree said. The 12,000 square foot area will make it possible for both school children and local residents to participate in such sports as hockey, tennis and basketball.
