vei 20 - Friday, January 12, 1999 - North Shore News Women learn about health care choices WOULD MOST women buy a car or a computer or clothes or grocer- ies without shopping around? Probably not. Yet, most women undergo major treatment based on one practitioner’s opinion. Skills used to make decisions in the marketplace can be transferred to the health care domain. North Shore Continuing Educa- tion is offering a course called Women as Health Care Consumers on Monday, Jan. 29 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Carson Graham Secondary School, 2145 Jones Ave., North Vancouver. The course will help women sharpen and share their consumer capabilities in the health care system. Participants will discuss: communication — skills, practical ways to select and visit practi- tioners, where to find and under- stand reliable information, second opinions, common procedures for women and individual prevention Strategies. The instructor is Robin Barnett who has been active in women’s health issues for almost 10 years. She is the co-author of A Feminist Approach to Pap Tests, and has also done research and developed materials and programs about STDs including AIDS, gynecological concerns, hysterec- tomy and general self-help issues. Correct body posture “AN AWARENESS Through Movement program is being of- fered at recCentre Lonsdale on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 16. Taught by Anna Haltrecht, the classes, which rur from 8 to 9:30 p.m., are based on the teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. The program focuses on gentle non-strenuous movements that ac- tivate the body’s enormous capaci- ty for self-correction. As a result, the participant learns how to move with more ease and fluidity, as well as improving posture and breathing. Other benefits are relaxation, pain and tension release, and in- creased flexibility. Haltrecht has over 15 years ex- perience in movement education and performing arts and is a cer- tified Feldenkrais practitioner. She is also a dancer and choreographer with Metropolis Dance Company which uses some movements deriv- ed from the Feldenkrais Method. Pre-registration is advised.
