Ministry of Health, Continuing Care Division, Long Term Care Program benefits an _ individual must, among other requirements, have been resident in B.C. for the previous 12 months. I’m afraid that your mother-in-law would not qualify if you moved her to Van- couver until she had lived here for a year, assuming that she meets all the other qualifications. These requirements include be- ing a Canadian citizen or perma- nent resident, having a_health- related handicap or disability that necessitates assistance for every- day living and being over the age of 19. In exceptional cases a waiver of the residency requirements may be approved by the local health unit long-term care administrator and the regional director in Victoria. Some of the things that would be considered include whether the applicant had spent % of her adult life in B.C., whether the service is essential rather than convenient and whether there is hardship to the applicant and her family. An applicant who does not mect the cesidency requirements and who cannot be considered for a residency waiver remains responsi- ble for the total cost of services until she fulfils residency and all other eligibility requirements, If you were to move your mother-in-law into your own home you could purchase homemaker services on a private-pay basis.
