Firefighters keep busy NORTH VANCOUVER District Fire Department firefighters responded to several home fires during the Canada Day weekend. Firefighters were called to a tenth-floor suite at 2016 Fullerton Avenue, June 30, at 6:19 p.m. Fire damage was contained to the bedroom of the suite, which was vacant at the time of the fire. The rest of the suite sustained heat and smoke damage. Investigation into the cause of the fire continues. Firefighters responded to a kitchen fire just before 8 p.m., July 1, at 776 Browairg Place. “ A fire department spokesman said the fire started in the kitchen when cooking grease, being heated for French fries, ignited. A smoke alarm alerted the occupants, who then called the fire department. Damage has been estimated at $20,000. At 5:31 a.m., July 2, firefighters were called to put out a fire ina vacant house located ai the corner of Mountain Highway and Rupert Street. . The house, slated for demolition, sustained considerabie damage to the upper floor. The cause of the fire is suspected to be arson. NV man jailed for sex crimes A 30-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced June 27 ia North Vancouver provincial court to eight months in jail and plac- ed on probation far one year after he pleaded guilty to two sex- ual-assault related counts. The man, whose name cannot be oubdlished because it could lead to the identities of his victims, was originally charged with sexualiy assaulting a female family member in connection with incidents that took place between Oct. 21, 1988 and Nov. 79, 1988. He was further charged with committing gross indecency and indecent assault in connection with incidents alleged to have occur- red between Jan. 1, 1976 and Dec. 3, 1979 in which another female family member was assaulted. . Appearing before Judge J.D. Layton, the man pleaded guilty to the sexual assault and indecent assault charges. The Crown entered a stay of proceedings in the gress indecency charge. man in jail A 28-YEAR-OLD Vancouver man was sentenced June 21 in North Vancouver provincial court to seven days in jail after he pleaded guilty to obtaining goods under false pretences from a North Van- couver business. Pat Luckett was originally charged in connection with a May 29 incident in which be obtained four electric guitars worth an estimated $4,143 from Larrivee Guitars Ltd. | Cabby robbed _ in North Van A LOCAL cab driver was robbed of an undetermined amourt of money at approximately 11:30 p.m., June 21. The driver was threatened with a weapon. North Vancouver RCMP are looking for a suspect described as a well-dressed biack male, approximately 30 years of age. Information may be forwarded to the RCMP at 985-1311. Sex assault charge dropped A CHARGE of sexual assault was dropped Tuesday in West Van- couver provincial court against 2 46-year-old West Vancouver man. Mohammed Seyed Shidfar was originaliy charged in connection with incidents alleged to have occurred between March 1, 1988 and Dec. 31, 1988 in which a female was alleged to have been assaulted. He was scheduled to appear Tuesday for a preliminary bearing into the charge. ; But at the outset of the hearing, the Crown directed that a stay of proceedings be entered in the charge against Shidfar. § - Friday, July 7, 1989 - North Shore News New development planned for Whistler WHISTLER MOUNTAIN Ski Corp. is proceeding with plans to develop three major projects in the Whistler Creck area of the municipality. The first project involves the replacement of the two Green chairlifts this summer with a high-speed detachable quad lift, which will be in operation for the 1989-90 ski season. The second project involves a comprehensive redevelopment of the old gondola base centred around a high-speed detachable quad lift and a new day lodge building, which will begin con- struction in the spring of 1990. The $20 million lodge will con- tain complete skier facilities in- cluding restaurants, ski shop, ski camps facility plus 130 hotel- condominium units. The overall redevelopment will, in its final phase, contain an addi- tional 55-unit townhouse project, 150-room hotel, a small commer- cial centre and paved parking for 1,000 cars. The gondola base was the origi- nal beginning of Whistler Moun- tain and still provides access for day skiers and residents alike to the mountain. The Whistler Creek redevelop- ment is planned to start in early 1990 with an anticipated comple- tion date for the first phase, in- cluding day lodge, commercial space and 130 hotel-condominium units, by the winter season of 1990. When completed, in !992, it is expected that the total value of the redevelopment will exceed $60 mil- lion. The third project is the devcl- opment of an outstanding 60-acre residential site located above Whistler Creek. Site development is scheduled to begin in the spring of 1990 with some lots and multi-family sites ready for late summer of 1990.
